Jian Zhaoling introduces the Hemark Museum, which is located in central eastern Norway and is a regional museum for the municipalities of Stange, Hamar, Loten, and Ringsaker. Sverre Fehn’s award-winning design elegantly integrates historical, social, and environmental concerns. For example, the Hemark’s medieval section includes ruins of a cathedral that was originally built in Romanesque style and then converted to Gothic style. The medieval section also includes an active herb garden with plants popular during the Middle Ages. The ethnological section introduces cultural life from the 16th through the early 20th century. In addition, the museum is an active archaeological site, and visitors can see the state of the dig as well as explore remnants on a field outside the museum building. Jian emphasizes that Fehn’s design decisions highlight and enhance the museum content precisely because the glass, steel, and wood of the structure illuminatingly contrast with pre-existing human and natural elements of the site itself.
