Spatial Schema of Preposition “Through”: Cognitive Mechanism and Representations

Through空间图式的场景成分特征多种多样,为组合成不同空间图式打下了良好的基础;而场景成分之间的关系又十分灵活,受到较少限制。因此through在表征空间意义时可以较为灵活地把形态多样的焦点和背景配对成多种组合,表现力极其丰富。本研究采用泰尔米(Talmy)空间图式理论对through的空间元素和图式特征进行分析,探讨through表征的多种空间意义。

As a polysemous English preposition, ＂through＂ has various spatial representations uue to its variable spatial schema. First,in through＇s spatial schema,Figures and Grounds show a variety of features. Second,the combination of Figures and Grounds in formation of schema is quite flexible and much less restrained than some other prepositions. These two factors contribute to the expressive power of the important polysemous word. To investigate ＂through＂ , this paper adopted Talmy＇s relatively integrated theory of spatial schema.
