By analyzing the modal auxiliaries used by four couples in 42 conversations of theTV-series "Double sided tape", this study aims to find out the differences of the use of the modal auxiliaries between female and male roles and to explain these differences in combination with the social cultural factors. There are two analysis results: (1) In the conversations female roles tend to use more modal auxiliaries that express epistemic and volitive modality; (2) Male discourses include more ablitive and deontic modality. On the basis of the metonymic relation between language stereo- types and social stereotypes in the cognitive sociolinguistics that language stereotypes can trigger our knowledge about different social groups, we can conclude that the above mentioned speech features trace back to the social culture. In the traditional Chinese culture, female and male have different roles in the social division of labor and then also different social status.
