The Intellectual Mode of Thinking in American Contemporary Innovative Poetry: An Interview with Hank Lazer

Hank Lazer is a poet, critic, and professor of English at the University of Alabama, USA. As one of the leading figures in contemporary American poetry, he has published 17 books of poems. In 2012 Prof. Liu Fuli visited the University of Alabama as a visiting scholar supervised by Prof. Lazer, and had an academic interview with Prof. Lazer. Focused on the innovativity of the avant-garde and contemporary poetic genres in America, the interview covers a broad range from language poetry to Dr. Lazer＇s uniqueness in poetic composition, and to contemporary American poetry at large. In terms of LANGUAGE poetry, Dr. Lazer answered questions concerning its basic features, origin, development and experimental modes of meaning-making; his inspiring belief is that this genre represents an affirmation of and continuity with the fundamentally innovative and heuristic elements of modernism, constituting an important reconnection with it. About the subtle questions of the innovativity of contemporary American poetry and his own works, Dr. Lazer, beginning from the assumptions about binary oppositions, that is~ traditional poetry vs. innovative poetry, and textuality vs. reality, showed his viewpoints on the thinking mode, the relationship between lyricism and spirit, and the impersonality vs. the immediacy of personal experience in poetic writings with reference to his poems as samples.
