A considerable amount of research has been conducted in the Chinese academia to discuss the extension or transformation of Chinese culture in Chinese American literary works; however, the academic discourse is largely confined to the debate on the "authenticity" of Chinese culture initiated by Maxine Hong Kingston and Frank Chin, and fails to register the dissolution of Chinese culture in contemporary Chinese American literature that has been rigorously shaped by globalization, new immigrants and post-theoretical discourse since 1980s. This essay aims to examine the deconstruction of the authentic Chinese culture, its replacement by Chinese American culture, or its integration with other cultures as represented in contemporary Chinese American literature. In conducting this study on the new trend in Chinese American literature and its underlying social and cultural complexities, the author hopes to call for critical attention to this literary and cultural phenomenon in the context of globalization.
