Washington Square, one of Henry James's two best-known novels written in nls eany years with a wholly American setting, is a wonderful novel displaying the ethical situations of the age. By applying Ethical Criticism, this paper explores the relationship between the heroine's tragic fate and ethical distortion. It points out that capital honogerization causes ethical distortion as shown in problems of family ethics and love and marriage ethics, which results in the heavy price the heroine has to pay during her growth. By presenting the heroine's personal tragedy, James expresses his deep concerns for ethical chaos and mental crisis, and through the works he conveys his ethical thought.
