James Laughlin and Ezra Pound

James Laughlin was the founder of New Directions that grew to become one of the most influential book companies in the United States. Laughlin published many of the most consequential writers of his time, and made a major contribution to literature as well as to the field of publishing. He was a lifelong admirer of Ezra Pound. Although increasing controversy surrounded Pound during World War II, Laughlin published many literary books by Ezra Pound. In 1948 Laughlin published The Pisan Cantos, and the next year Bollingen Prize went to Pound. In the years following the prize, Laughlin reached out to the reader and the academy and sought to recast Pound as a ~reat ooet.
