Under the Western Eyes is one of the three of Joseph Conrad's political novels. The protagonist Razumov is a student at St. Petersburg, Russia. Being unsociable by nature, he concentrates on his studies, with no interest in revolutionary activities. But an accident bogs him in the political mess, which stops his peaceful life and starts his reluctant complex physical life and his psychological twists and turns. Ever since its publication, Joseph Conrad's Under the Western Eyes has received plenty of critical attention, with the focus on such themes as politics and human nature, loyalty and betrayal, existence and nihility, and language and narrative. This paper deals with two other issues, which have gained less attention but nonetheless are important, i.e., what human beings rely on and the force of language. These issues are both the object of exploration of this novel with its particular perspective and the common object of exploration of all novels.
