On the Importance and Function of Imagination in Newman's Idea of Liberal Education

The idea of Liberal Education is the fundamental connotation and content of Newman＇ s Uni- versity Idea. The connotation of Liberal Education is mind education, and imagination can bring out the in- tellect- extending by its funcations such as memory, synthesis, creation and sublimation, which fulfill the goal of Liberal Education in the end. Imagination is the starting- point, driving - force, essential character- stic and final resolution.
