Objective to explore how the grass-root hospitals manage nursing adverse events and how nurses perceive adverse events, and to provide basis for development of administrative strategies. Methods A total of 171 nurses from 10 grass-root hospitals were randomly selected to fill out a self-designed questionnaire. Results Totally, the hospitals where 89.47% of the nurses worked had developed management measures for nursing adverse events; the hospitals where 87. 72% of the nurses worked were able to take effective measures against adverse events; the hospitals where 91.81% of the nurses worked were able to analyze the root causes of the events; the hospitals where 88. 30% of the nurses worked would punish persons involved; 74. 85% of the nurses would voluntarily report nursing adverse events. Conclusion It is a common phenomenon that nurses would be punished for an adverse event in grass-root hospitals, which is not beneficial to building of a safety culture and would make nurses lack the attention to the events. We should advocate a non-punitive culture, formulate appropriate administrative measures, place great importance on previous cases, and improve methods analyzing adverse events.
