蔡邕文才盖世,刚直忠正,但一生坎坷困顿,建树无多,且死于非命。这既有客观原因,更有主观原因,其中短于自知之明、缺乏坚定的人生目标,既淡于仕进而又热心政治,既缺乏政治智慧而又勇于任事,具有十足的书生气,是其未能充分施展才华、实现人生价值的重要原因。

Cai Yong is matchless for his literary talent. Though decent and with loyalty, he achieves not many deeds in his exhaustedly whole life. There are several reasons for this. His not seeing clearly his own limitations, his wanting of firm aims of life, his confusing behaviour of indifferently attitude towards the official career and his strong interest in politics, his unwise valour in governmental affairs, and his bookish approaches are the main obstacles to him when Cai Yong decides to put to good use of his talents so as to realise his life value.
