To the music circle of China, the death of Mr. Qian Renkang symbolizes the end of an era. Like many outstanding intellectuals of his generation, Qian Renkang had both perfect command of Chinese culture and rich knowledge of Western music. He was such a great expert in both Chinese and Western studies that his accomplishments and his spirit won respect and admiration from all of our generations. Mr. Qian is a banner of the Chinese music circle, a benchmark for knowledge, and a unique ″academic resource″. Qian Renkang was well-known as a musicologist, music theorist, music educator, music translator and composer. Each of the titles is veritable for him. However, in my opinion, a review of Qian Renkang's entire life justifies the fact that the most appropriate identity for him and his lifelong career is a scholar. Why is that?I believe that a real scholar is one who should think, explore and compose totally on his own with persistent efforts, and should have substantial writings and concrete theories to reflect the truemeanings of life. Being a genuine scholar, Qian Renkang is a true model in the present music circle of China. His entire life witnessed his love for music, his passion for academic research, and his diligence in writing. Although he passed way, he has, nevertheless, left us a rich heritage, or namely, a huge spiritual wealth for all of us. Whoever wants to be a music scholar must calm down and concentrate on his thinking when facing with the scholarly legacy of Mr. Qian Renkang. Looking at Mr. Qian's writings on music with over ten million Chinese characters in total, we are in fact experiencing the 70 years or so of Chinese music academic development, and in the meantime, re-considering the significance of music academics and our own attitude towards learning. The inspirations from Mr. Qian Renkang's scholarly legacy are just great and impressive, and in my personal view, the most important of all is reflected in these three aspects: academic passion, research orientation and language expression. All those who knew Mr. Qian Renkang well must be familiar with his habit of often putting forth riddles for others to solve. Perhaps at this moment, Mr. Qian in a faraway place is putting forth this riddle to us: ″How should we pursue learning on music?Guess an idiom.″ Maybe he has already had an answer to this riddle and is waiting for us to solve it; or maybe he has no answer at all, but is merely trying in his unique humorous way to inspire our own thoughts. Indeed, we should settle down and ask ourselves how we can live up to the expectations of our predecessors by taking the right way in our academic career.
