The development of the novel symbolizes the complex struggle among people, the conflict be- tween people and the external social ethics, as well as the clash between the imperfect human today and the perfect in the future, and illustrates complex and multi- faceted characters of Chillingworth： loneli- ness but kindness, self- redemption and salvation, revenge and tolerance.
