《小说月报》(1910-1920)中登载大量弹词作品,编辑者恽铁樵选用这种文学样式的原因是弹词自身通俗易懂,阅读的受众范围广泛,更易于传播。编辑者选用新体弹词的目的,是实行通俗教育,通俗教育的意义在于弘扬仁义道德,忠孝节义等传统文化。传统文化的弘扬,对新文学启蒙后留下的一段传统道德空白,起到了某种程度的填补作用。恽铁樵在《小说月报》中选用的弹词的主题主要体现在崇尚气节、义的感化、劝孝劝忠、科学兴国等四个方面。

Short Story Monthly （1910-1920） published a large number of works in Tanci. The reason why the editor Yun Tieqiao chose this style of literature was that Tanci was popular, easily spread and has a wide range of readers. The purpose of choosing new Tanci was for popular education, whose significance lies in promoting traditional culture about virtue, morality, loyalty, filial piety, chastity and righteousness. Carrying forward the traditional culture made up for a section of the traditional moral blank to some degree after new literary enlightenment. The theme of Tanci in Short Story Monthly （1910-1920） is mainly reflected in four aspects--advocating integrity, justice, loyalty, filial piety , revitalizing China by science.
