The research has made a questionnaire survey of 408 English majors ranging from the first to fourth year and 362 second - year non - English majors who have experienced difficuhies in English writing and compared similari- ties and dissimilarities in self- concept of writing difficulty between them. The survey results show that both English and non - English majors regard language and content as the most difficult and the non - English majors have experi- enced the greatest difficulty in language. The cognition of writing difficulties of the English majors varies with the grade and bigger differences in the self - concept of writing difficulty exist between different genders. The research suggests that in the writing teaching different methods for students of different grades and genders should be adopted to achieve good teaching effect.
