Zhang Xuecheng's Views on Ancient Chinase Prose

乾嘉之际,发生了著名的古文之争。章学诚本着"辩彰学术、考镜源流"的学术宗旨,对"古文"的产生、发展做出了详细考证,并指出"古文"是一种源于史学且以《春秋》"比事属辞"为义例标准的、以叙事(多纪传、时制内容)为手段的、体现著述者独立思想的著述之文,是作者立言的最好载体。并以此为标准,对其他学者的"古文"进行了有的放矢的批评。

The famous controversy of ＂ancient style prose ＂ took place during the period of Qianlong and Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty. The principle of Zhang Xueeheng is ＂examining the mirror source and course, distinguishing the academic chapter＂. He made a detailed research on the generation and development of ＂ancient style prose＂. He pointed out that ＂ancient style prose＂ is a kind of expressions,which originated from the historical science, using the rules of Chunqiu ＂the literary stories can be employed to mean other things＂ as form standard and the method of narrative , most of which are biographies and contemporary content. ＂Ancient style prose＂, meanwhile, is the best mean to expound teachings and express the writer＇s independent thoughts. Zhang Xuedcheng used these principles effectively to criticize other scholars＇＂ ancient style proses＂ with a definite aim in view.
