乔叟在《坎特伯雷故事》中塑造了一些"不合适"的母亲,表现出对以圣母玛利亚为代表的基督教母性的极力推崇。这些母亲形象有助于乔叟探讨潜在的权力运作机制、社会文化话语和母性之间的多元互动关系。在故事的再创作中,乔叟沿袭了中世纪文化中女性-母亲形象的两级模式,即夏娃-圣母玛利亚模式,展现了"圣母玛利亚昏厥"这一深入人心的艺术形象的魅力。
Geoffrey Chaucer portrays some unbecoming mothers in The Canterbury Tales and shows his positive attitude towards Christian motherhood. These maternal images help Chaucer to explore interactive relationships among potential power structure, social discourse and institutionalized motherhood. Chaucer follows the polarization of woman-mother images in the Middle Ages, i. e. Eva- Ave, and displays the pervasive image of ＂Mary＇ Swoon＂ in rewriting these stories.
