Sediment electric energy from microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) are typical membrane-free microbial fuel cells and obtain organic-rich aquatic sediments by the catalysis of electrochemically active microorganisms. Based on the status of the research and development at home and abroad, this paper discusses the ap plication of SMFCs from three aspects:provision of low-power electrical energy,in-situ sediment bioremed iation and toxicity detection sensor. The results suggest that SMFCs can provide low-power for the instru ments of long-term monitoring in the ocean or inland water bodies and also can be used as a new and effi cient technology of in-situ sediment bioremediation. The paper analyzes the existing problems in the appli cation process and points out the potential directions of the application of SMFCs.
