Possessed of strong Confucian traditional culture and much influenced by the Christian thought in the West, The Ninth Widow carries Yan Geling＇ s profound reflections on the traditional Confucian family ethics. The novel exhibits a more complex ideological and cultural background in that it not only maintains and inherits the traditional Confucian family ethics but also reflects on and transcends them. By surveying the narration of family ethics in the novel from the perspective of two basic relations between father and son as well as husband and wife, we can further understand the writing traits of Yan Geling.
