In daily verbal communication, a certain expression (an initial expression) would rise in the mind in the first place when we want to express our feelings and intentions. But for a variety of reasons, we, in fact, choose an indirect polite utterance to express ourselves. The proposition of the later expression is almost the same with the former one, but differs in its representation. Why we should make more efforts to construct and express this kind of utterances embellished by interpersonal rhetoric becomes an issue needed to be explored. Based on the observation and analysis of the same utterance from the perspectives of four pragmatic theories, we can understand the speaker's essential motives behind the indirect utterance.
