In Hardy＇s ＂environment and character＂ novels, the natural environment and the character＇s person- alities are closely related, inseparably. The wilderness of Hardy＇s The Return of the Native seems to have some mysterious forces and spirituality, which seems to become the god of mastering the figure＇s fate in the unseen world. The relationships of the characters and the wilderness also determine their final fates. This paper ana- lyzes the different ＂returning road＂ Clym, Eustacla, Wildeve and Christian, from the angel of their different relations to the wilderness, which reveals the interconnection between the destinies of characters and nature in Hardy＇s thoughts.
