J. M. Coetzee is the most controversial social novelist in Contemporary Euro--American literary world. In most of his novels, readers cannot ignore those historical and cultural topics such as power and violence in the period of post--segregation. Employing the postcolonial theory, this article rereads his novel Disgrace from an ethic perspective of cultural criticism, and explores the writing of power and violence. J. M. Coetzee explored the dilemma of the white in the posteolonial times and expressed his reflection on history, his worry about reality and his hope for the future of South Africa.
