"娘"在甲骨文中即已出现,用于人名。它与出现于春秋战国时代的""是不同的字。南北朝时期,"娘"字有了"母亲"及"少女之号"等意义。自唐以降,二字逐渐混用以至合并。在这一过程中","表示"母称"则成为主流。但随着汉字的简化",娘"表意逐渐丰富,将表示"母亲"的"孃"并入其中,最终获得了"正体"的地位。

Simplified ＂Niang＂ was used as the name in the oracle-bone inscriptions of the Shang Dynasty. It was different from the Complex ＂Niang＂ that appeared in the Spring and Autumn period. In the Northern and Southern dynasties, the Simplified ＂Niang＂ extended its meanings, such as ＂mother＂ and ＂girl＂. Since the Tang Dynasty, two words gradually mixed and merged. In this process, Complex ＂Niang＂ that meant ＂mother＂ had be- come the mainstream. But with the Chinese characters simplified, the meaning of the simplified ＂Niang＂ gradual- ly enriched. Simplified ＂Niang＂, being a substitute for the Complex ＂Niang＂, finally got the ＂dominant＂ posi- tion.
