本文是为涂又光先生专著《中国高等教育史论》写的"序",论述了先生极富创造性的教育思想。本文共五部分:第一,论述该专著完全是从中国高等教育历史这个实际出发的,讲史立论,均据于此;第二,论述了高等教育不等于高等学校,高等教育不等于高等学校教育,高等学校不等于高等学校教育;第三,论述了高等教育三个阶段,"人文——科学——人文·科学",以及人文与科学是高等教育中的一个基本矛盾;第四,论述了"教育定位于文化领域之中",以及文化与教育的关系;第五,论述了中国高等教育的总规律就是"大学之道,在明明德,在亲民,在止于至善"。最后以"千秋万岁名,寂寞身后事"表述了对先生的思念。

It＇s the preface written for the Historical Theory of Higher Education by TU You-guang, to elaborate his creative insights into education. This preface mainly interprets five points： firstly, the book is full of sound arguments, based on the history of China higher education; secondly, higher education doesn＇t equal to higher education institutions or education in higher education institutions, and higher education institutions don＇t equal to edu- cation in them; thirdly, there＇ re three periods of higher education from humanity to science then till to humanity and science, which lie the basic contradiction of humanity and science; fourthly, it explores the relationship of culture and education, and argues that education should locate in the field of culture; at last, it expounds the law of China higher education that the way of the great learning involves manifesting virtue, loving the people, and abiding by the highest good.
