From late Qing to the Republican period, there were many pictorials and cartoon magazines published in China, introducing new messages, images and ideas. As an intellectual - oriented magazine, Eastern Miscellany made use of pho- tos and cartoons to deliver messages and stimulate readers interests in current affairs such as Japanese imperialism during the Nanjing decade from 1928 to 1937. These visual images not only supported the argument of articles printed in the maga- zine but also showed what the magazine concerned of were also discussed by other local and overseas periodicals. This arti- cle adopts the framework of new cultural history to analyze the visual images printed and reprinted in Eastern Miscellany in the studied period. It shows that both photos and cartoons were powerful evidences and effective means to support the argu- ment of the magazine and amuse anti - Japanese sentiment.
