Personality Conflicts and Female Predicament——On Miles Franklin's My Brilliant Career

In the light of Freudian psychoanalytic theory, this thesis initiates an analysis of the personality conflicts and female predicament in Australian woman writer Miles Franklin＇ s works. Taking My Brilliant Career as a case study, this thesis focu- ses on the personality structure of Sybylla, her mother and grandmother to manifest the developing process of Sybylla＇ s inde- pendent ego from birth to maturity and to the final stagnation. It argues that Sybylla＇ s independent ego results from the influ- ence of bush environment, her battling personality is displayed in her ambivalent attitudes toward marriage, and her ultimate loss and loneliness is intertwined with the repression of superego. Sybylla＇ s frustration in the conflicts of her personality im- plies the predicament of female ego in patriarchal society.
