The Chinese writer Pu Songling of the early Qing Dynasty and the German romantic writer E. T. A. Hoffmann of the 19th century were both famous for the description of ghosts and their grotesque contact with human beings. Their literary works have a certain likeness in illustrating a subject and artistic features, which makes a comparative study between their works pos- sible. But their artistic expressions are strikingly different as they were produced in different cultural backgrounds. Especially, in the aspect of the narrative structure, they each display distinct characteristics of the cycling and complete closing beginnings and ends. In terms of the internal plot of the text, one adopted the tightening logical narrative, and the other the intersecting narrative. The article compares the works of these two authors to explore the different artistic features in the narrative structure of the artistic fairy tale and the strange tales from the Liaozhai Studio as well as the aesthetic and artistic influence of Chinese and West traditions on the works.
