The effects of mannanoligosaccharide(MOS) on immune responses and glutathione peroxidase (GSH Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities of blood in suckling piglets were evaluated. 24 piglets selected from 6 farrows, 4 piglets from each farrow, were divided randomly into 2 groups: experiment(12) and control(12). The piglets were orally administrated with MOS in experiment group and saline solusion in control at 2 days old. After then administrations were done every 2 days, up to 28 days old. The results show that the serum IgA(2.102 g/L), PHA lymphoblast transformation rate(47.75%), macrophage activity(34.38%) and total T lymphocyte(CD 3, 61.75%) are greatly significantly higher in experiment group than in control(P<0.01); the serum IgG(6.77%) is significantly higher in experiment than in control(P<0.05); Also, GSH Px(41.33 u/mL) and SOD (149.83 U/mL) activities in experiment group are greatly significantly higher than in control (P<0.01). It is concluded that both the humoral and cell mediated immunity may be stimulated by oral adiministration of MOS. Those effects are expressed not only by the increase of serum IgG, IgA and total T cell, but also by the synchronous enhancement of the activities of GSH Px and SOD in blood. Its mechanisms are thought to be likely dependant upon the improvement of intestinal absorption of some nutrients, such as Zn, Cu, Se.
