造纸术的发明是一个渐进过程 ,不是一种突发现象。造纸术的发明源于纸币 (冥币 )与包装的广泛需求。造纸术的改革源于文人书画的需求。纸张的普及应用 ,源于宗教宣传与书信来往 ,先民间 ,后官方 ;先山区 ,后平原 ;先地方 ,后宫廷。蔡伦是近代造纸术的发明人。纸有多种形态与功能。出土古纸 ,不能单靠借物断代 ,也不能单靠书法断代 ,应从时间与空间两方面综合多种条件作判断。

The invention of papermaking is a progressive process,not an abrupt phenomenon.It originated from wide needs of papermoney and packaging,and form needs of scholars' writings and paintings.The popular application of paper originated form religion propaganda and letter communication,first in folk and then in govenrment;first in mountain area and then in flatlands;first in local districts and then in courts.Cai Lun is credited with inventor of paper making in modern times.Paper has had a variety of forms and functions.It is quite impossible to judge the times only from ancient paper unearthed and the writings of it,and proper judges should be made through all kinds of conditions on both the time and space factors.
