In this paper, all kinds of organic tanning agents (retanning agents) are divided into different types. In each group, the names and formula of tanning (retanning) agents, the tanning mechanisms and properties of tanned leathers are introduced. Also, the recent developments since the 1990s in all research fields concerned are summarized.
