The molecules found in consumer fabric softeners have changed dramatically in the last five years,particularly in Europe.Dialkyldimethyl quats,and imidoamine quats are still quite popular in the United States,South America,and Asia.Three different types of esterquats are common in Europe,while two of these have found some use in the United States.An esteramide salt has been introduced in Japan.The structures,methods of preparation,environmental properties,formulation characteristic and softening of these materials are different and will be discussed and contrasted.
