Wang Shunan and the Development of Gansu in the Late Qing Dynasty(1896～1906)

王树楠清末长期在西部地区任职,其在甘肃的十余年间,兴修水利,革除弊端,开办统捐,为清末甘肃地方事业做出了重要贡献。同时撰写欧洲史学著作,倡导变革,救亡图存,关注西北边疆局势。政绩卓越,升任甘肃新疆布政使,在甘肃的十年对王树楠的仕途与为学具有重要意义。

As an official in the western areas for a long time in late Qing dynasty, Wang Shunan,during his over ten years＇stay in Gansu, had made great contribution to the development of local achievements by building water conservancy projects ,abolishing defects in management and establishing Hessian Cloth Tasseled Donation. At the same time,he wrote books about European history,advocated reforms to achieve salvation,and paid close attention to the Northwest Frontier situation. His excellent performance in his position brought him the promotion to be Gansu -Xinjiang Buzheng Shi. His ten -year~ life in Gansu was of great importance for his political career and scholarship.
