Some Hebrews in the New Testament got their names from the patriarchs, prophets or celebrities in the Old Testament. Under the influence of Greek culture and the rule of Roman Empire, other Hebrews had both Hebrew and Greek names, or Hebrew and Roman (Latin) names at that time. Besides, there were Greek and Ro- man people in the New Testament. As a result, Hebrew, Greek and Roman names exist side by side in the New Tes- tament. Being aware of the cultural connotations of biblical names and their influence on western culture helps Chi- nese people study English and learn more about western culture.
