After a general account of the popularity of Elizabethan revenge tragedies as well as its background and significance, the article focuses on the relationship between the revenge tragedy and Shakespeare with his two revenge plays. While Titus Andronicus is viewed from two angles, carefully examined is how Shakespeare succeeded in surpassing both himself and the revenge tragedy form in his writing career from Titus and Andronicus to Hamlet.
