任何文学活动,都是在一定的文化背景下进行的,"意新语工"的提出,自然也是与北宋的文化发展相适应的结果。宋诗的发展困境、文人唱和的需要以及韩愈的典范作用都是其外在的文化背景,而儒家言可尽意的乐观主义和禅宗否定权威的精神则是其内在的驱动力,"意新语工"所反映出的传统审美理想、蕴涵的时代精神、彰显的文人心态,无不照应着时代、昭示着宋诗的发展方向。
