Global agile manufacturing systems (GAMS) are becoming an important advanced manufacturing mode in the 21st century. Distributed product data management (DPDM) is one of the key techniques for the implementation of GAMS. This paper analyzes the special characteristics of DPDM. A DPDM framework and a layered data management model in the distributed environment are presented based on the Multi Server cooperation mode. Several related techniques are proposed including object oriented distributed database management techniques, Internet based DPDM integration techniques, mutual operation techniques for distributed objects, etc.
