The downstream area of the 16 th World Petroleum Congress was briefly summarized. The current status and the developing trend of petroleum refining industry were discussed according to the following six parts: improved fuel qualities and clean exhaust gases, development of refining processes urged by stringent environmental regulations, new technologies to upgrade heavy oil, catalysis in petroleum refining, treatment of refinery gas emissions, and the future refinery.
