Origin of Current Yue Dialect's Pronunciation of Ancient Three and Four Class Characters Under the Rhyme Geng

关于粤方言中古梗摄三四等韵字的读音,有学者认为,白读来自客家方言,文读是粤方言原有读法。从粤方言大量的调查材料、以及相关文史资料等多方面证据来看,白读应为粤方言本有、文读层来自通语的影响,因此,客方言来源说并不正确。此外,在粤方言的边远地区,梗、曾摄合流比中心地区更快,也是有其社会原因的。

In the Yue dialects,the characters under ancient rhyme Geng(梗) with three and four classes show two types of pronunciation: oral(vernacular) pronunciation and written(classical) pronunciation.Some scholars hold that the vernacular sounds comes from Hakka dialects and the classical are inherent in the Yue dialect.With a great deal of materials of the Yue dialects,it concludes that the vernacular sounds are inherent from ancient Yue dialects,and that the classical pronunciations have resulted from the influence of Common Language(official Chinese).In some remote areas of Yue dialect,some characters under ancient rhymes Geng and Zeng with different pronunciations have converged on the same sounds more quickly than in the central Yue-dialect areas,which implied some social and cultural reasons.
