It is crucial for laboratory medicine to analyze correctly the test results and learn more clinical information from a simple inspection reports. This article illustrated the steps and processes of establishing the reference ranges in laboratory medicine, and made clear the criteria in the application of medical reference values to judge the normal or abnormal levels of body by physiological, biochemical indicators. The cognitive differences on the laboratory test results between laboratory physicians and clinicians can not be ignored. The importance and necessity of communication between the laboratory physicians and clinicians were emphasized here.
