On the categorization and translation of vague language in political discourse——A study on vague language employed in press briefings

模糊语的使用是中外新闻发布会中常见的一种语用策略,在梳理国内外对政治语篇的研究基础之上,以中外新闻发布会为语料实例,总结出数量、人称、内容和程度模糊四种类别。发现其共同翻译策略是以模糊译模糊,这在很大程度上有助于提高新闻发言人表达的有效性,同时也有助于实现外交场合的交际目的。

Vague language, which frequently appears in press briefings, is one of the significant pragmatic strategies employed by spokesmen. This article, based on a summary of research on political discourse, tentatively categories such four types of vague language in press briefings as quantifiers, pronouns, content and scale. The translation strategy in general is to render vague language into vague language, which can help spokesmen effectively improve their expressions and realize communicative goals on diplomatic occasions.
