Bradykinin potentiating peptides (BPPs) represent a class of short chain peptides with multiple biological activities, which are distributed widely in the snake venoms of Viperidae (mainly Crotalinae). BPPs can potentiate the actions of bradykinin, and can inhibit the activity of angiotensin-I converting enzyme (peptidyl-dipeptidase A) 1 (ACE). The cooperative effects lead to lower the blood pressure in snakebite envenomation, and make it possible to be a natural lead for the anti-hypertension drug (Captopril) design. Here, we briefly review the recent advances in snake venom BPPs, including their distribution, variety, structure and biological functions.
