Leptin,the obese gene product,is a 16kDa protein that is secreted by white adipocytes and plays important roles in the regulation of food intake,energy expenditure and body weight in rodent and human.In addition,It has important roles in initiating the onset of puberty,regulating the growth and development of the genital organs and the secretary action of sexual gonads and maintenance of the normal cycles.Leptin receptor exists in many organs and tissues.Recently,more and more evidences suggest that leptin plays it’s biological roles by acting at the hypothalamic level.The regulation mechanism of leptin on reproductive action in this level may be the result of direct effect on the GnRH neurons,or being mediated by the POMC system or NPY system.
