This article introduced the relationship between the essential medicines and the national drug policy and analyzed the progress and existing problems in the development of national essential medicine system. It was suggested that the essential medicine system and the national drug policy should be perfected in accordance with the national policies. Other policy related proposals were also put forward including the establishment of the management system of national drug policy and the financing mechanism of essential medicines, etc.
