An Analysis of the Poetic Purport of Feng Yu in Classic of Poetry

历代对诗经《郑风.风雨》一诗的题旨解释,大致有三种:《毛传》传统认为,此诗旨在"乱世则思君子";朱子解为"男女淫奔"之诗,现代人则舍去朱子之道德偏见,认为此诗表达了寻常正当的男女相悦之情;方玉润解为怀念朋友之诗。三种解释的差异取决于如何理解诗中的"君子"。透过对"君子"的辨析,可以得出对此诗主旨的三种不同理解,但这三种理解未尝不可合而为一。

There are mainly three interpretations on the poetic purport of Feng Yu in the Classic of Poetry. The tradition of Mao Commentary regards the poem as ＂aspiring for a gentleman （ noble man） in chaotic times＂. Zhu Zi holds that this is a poem of eloping, but the modems give up Zhu Zi＇ s moral prejudice and take the poem as a common and legitimate heart-to-heart love. Fang Yurun thinks that the purport is ＂missing friend＂. The differ- ence of these interpretations depends largely on how to understand the ＂gentleman＂ in the poem. Through an a- nalysis of ＂gentleman＂, three different interpretations of the purport of this poem can be achieved, which, nev- ertheless, should he better to be integrated into one.
