The low virulent Newcastle disease virus S 1 strain isolated from laying hens in Shandong Province was pathotyped and characterized by challenge with specific pathogen free (SPF) chickens, mean death time (MDT) of embryos, intracerebral pathogenicity index(ICPI), elution rate from chicken erythrocytes and hemagglutinin thermostability The results showed that there were biological differences between NDV-Lasota and F 48 E 8 stain virus In addition, the effect of amount of S 1 strain virus inoculated into 11 day-age SPF embryos on its propagation was determined The data indicated 10 35 EID 50 of seed virus would be optimal and not influence the infectivity of S 1 strain
