On the Historical Functions and Modern Enlightenment of the Imperial Examination

中国古代的科举考试在历史上曾有多种功能并发挥着许多积极的影响。其历史功能主要表现在政治、经济、文化和教育等方面。现代考试与古代科举考试有着一定的承继关系,因此,研究科举制度具有强烈的现实意义。在全面研究科举考试历史功能的基础上,应着重把握其现代转换,不断改革与完善我国现代考试制度,充分发挥考试功能的积极意义,为我国现代化建设服务。

The imperial examination system of ancient China had many-fold functions and many positive influences politically, economically, culturally and educationally. In fact, modern examination system is somewhat an inheritance of the ancient imperial examination system, hence it has the practical meaning of the study of the imperial examination system. On the basis of a comprehensive study of the historical func- tions of the imperial examination system, the emphasis should be put on its modern transformation so as to promote the reform and improvement of China＇s current examination system so that it will bring the posi- tive meaning of examination into full play to serve our country＇s modernization.
