Cognate Object Constructions: Construction and Lexical Coercion

本文以Goldberg的构式语法为理论基础,对英语同源宾语构式展开分析讨论。研究发现同源宾语构式是一种特殊的单宾语构式,是在表达"致使-存在"的单宾语构式压制下,获得合法性的。由于词汇压制的存在,含有非作格动词的同源宾语构式既能表达方式意义又能表达结果意义;而含有非宾格动词的同源宾语构式只能表达方式意义;同源宾语构式对其组成部分会有选择限制。

The present paper examines and expounds the English cognate object constructions（COCs） in the light of Goldberg’s construction grammar.Motivated by the causal relationship between the intransitive verbs used in the COCs and their corresponding cognate objects,these intransitive verbs are coerced by the monotransitive construction with a ＂cause-existence＂meaning,and thereby they can be apprehended as verbs of ＂cause-existence＂so as to take their corresponding COs.Thanks to the lexical coercion,COs with unergative verbs can be construed as either result or manner,while COs with unaccusative verbs can only be interpreted as manner.COCs have strict selectional restrictions towards their constituents.
