In Wittgenstein’s early writings Tractatus Logic-Philosophicus,the remark "we have to keep silent for the subjects which are ineffable"has aroused great interest both in the field of philosophy and philosophy of language, and most studies focus on"what is ineffable"to which the answer is still controversial.Adopting an alternative perspective, this paper analyzes Wittgenstein’s Language Image and explores the theoretical significance of Wittgenstein’s language philosophy in the process of researching into"to what we should keep silent"by taking the ineffability of grammatical category as a case. The purpose is to highlight the great value of Wittgenstein’s philosophy in linguistic research.
