Published in 1899, the novel The Awakening is another classic in the history of American Literature written by the female novelist Kate Chopin. Admittedly, the courageous questioning of the traditional female role and the explicit depiction of female's sexual desire in the novel incurred waves of criticism since its debut. Critics at that time condemned its obscenity and immorality; the local publication house even labeled it as "poison". However, the novel has attracted lasting attention from readers and scholars nowadays. The awakening of the leading role in this novel has long been the focus of researchers. By analyzing relationships between the three males and Edna, the writer finds that Edna's awakening actually experiences a retrogressive process--from discarding marriage, to pursuing romance, then to indulging in lust.
