The change of musical culture in the Meiji period of Japan influenced the transformation of Chinese musical culture in the late Qing dynasty. The activities of the so - called "school music education", "creative music and chorus", "promoting Western music", and "emerging of music discipline" were all influenced from Japan. Informed by culture changes in Japan' s Meiji period, modern Chinese culture underwent historical transformation, and a "new music" culture emerged. The social function of music and music education has been recognized unprecedentedly in the society, and played an effective role in social changes. The phenomenon also completely changed the direction of musical exchanges between the two countries: China started to learn from Japan instead of the other way around, which had an established music tradition since the Tang dynasty.
